How many bags do I need for a barbecue?

That depends on your group, barbecue time, and type of wood. As a rule of thumb:

  • 1 bag of 10 kg for a small barbecue (2–4 persons)
  • 1 bag of 20 kg for a long session or 4–6 people

Can I use the wood on a gas or electric barbecue?

No, this wood is intended for open fires (charcoal or wood-burning). You can add chunks to a smoker box for a gas barbecue, but it is not suitable as fuel for electric barbecues.

Is your wood suitable for smoking meat?

Yes, especially Swarthaak and Mopane give a nice, deep smoky flavor. Sekelbos is also suitable for more subtle smoking sessions. You can use large pieces or make smaller chunks yourself.

Is the wood also suitable for a fire pit or outdoor fireplace?

Yes. Sekelbos and Kameeldoring, in particular, produce a beautiful flame and few sparks, making them suitable for open fires and fireplaces.

Can I take the wood to the campsite or public place?

In principle, yes, but always check the regulations of the campsite or municipality. Some locations prohibit open fires or smoke. Kameeldoring or Sekelbos are best suited for places where you want minimal smoke.

Can I order wood types individually or in a mix?

Currently, we only supply full bags of each type. However, many customers order two types together to combine during barbecues.

Which wood is best for slow cooking?

For slow cooking, choose Mopane or Sekelbos. Mopane burns the longest and hottest, while Sekelbos is stable and spicy. Both provide long-lasting heat, ideal for pots and slow-cooked dishes.

What is the best way to store wood?

Store it dry, for example, in a shed or wood storage area. Not in plastic or sealed bags. Well-ventilated, the wood will remain in perfect condition.

Where does your wood come from?

All wood comes directly from Southern Africa (Namibia and South Africa) from controlled, sustainable sources. No European wood mixes or residual wood.

Can I combine multiple types of wood?

Absolutely. Many customers combine Sekelbos (for flame) with Mopane or Camel Doring (for long-lasting heat). This way, you get the best of both worlds.

You can find advice about this here.

Is your wood dry enough to use immediately?

Yes. All our wood is naturally dried and ready to use. You don't need to dry or split it further.

Does the wood give off a lot of smoke?

This varies by variety. Swarthaak produces the most smoke (for deep flavor), Kameeldoring the least. Sekelbos and Mopane fall somewhere in between.

What is the difference between the types of wood?

Each type of wood has its own unique burning time, smoke production, and flavor. Sikelbos is versatile, Mopane burns the longest, Cameldoring is fast and neutral, and Swarthaak produces a lot of smoke and a deep flavor. See our advice page for a comparison.
