Combining wood types: when and why?
Share
Different types of wood have different properties. By combining them, you get the best out of each.
Combining wood types for the barbecue
Why combine?
-
Some woods give off a lot of heat (such as Mopane), others a lot of flavour (such as Swarthaak).
-
Mixing gives you control over your fire and the flavor.
When to combine?
-
For long sessions: start with Sekelbos and build up to Kameeldoring.
-
For flavour: combine Mopane with Swarthaak for heat and aroma.
-
For direct grilling: Sekelbos alone or with Swarthaak.
Which combinations work well?
-
Sekelbos + Mopane = smooth start, long burning time
-
Kameeldoring + Swarthaak = slow burning, deep smoky flavor
-
Mopane + everything = always a solid base
Tip from the barbecue master
Use a maximum of two types at a time. This way you maintain control and learn to understand fire.
